The USATF East Region and New England Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships had its largest entry list in the four years running at the Providence Career and Technical Academy track complex, and many competitors attending achieved good season marks in the warm and friendly facility on a frigid day outdoors.
The Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame inducted their Class of 2014 on Sunday, adding a stellar group to the hall. Athletes selected had stellar Mass. high school careers as well having earned honors beyond graduation. Names going on the recognition wall at the Reggie Lewis Center this year are NCAA all-American distance runner Ari Lambie (The Bromfield School, Harvard) ; Melody Johnson (North Attleboro) still standing 28 year old state shot put record; Joe LeMar(Brockton) middle distance, who went on to a Paralympic gold medal; the national record setting 1979 Brockton 4x440 relay team - Paul Neves, Jim MacKinnon, Mike Suillivan, Dennis Doucette; middle distance runners Andy Powell (Oliver Ames) and Maurica Carlucci Powell (Franklin) now coaches at U.Oregon who were recognized during cross country season, and sprinter Brooks Johnson (Plymouth, 1952) who earned a gold medal in the Pan American Games and has coached an Olympic athlete in every Olympic Games from 1972 through 2012.
The John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center was again the site of some big performances in front of big crowds as two more US records were set over the weekend in the region's largest January collegiate invitational.
The usually low-key multi-team season opener at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center was kicked up to record level as Mary Cain and Galen Rupp treated fans to a World and an American record in a pair of invitational races at the end of the schedule.
Athletes and contributors from the New England association were recognized at the third annual USATF-New England Awards Banquet on Saturday night in Stoneham MA. Series and Grand Prix champions in many disciplines received embroidered vests for their accomplishments. By online vote, Tim Ritchie (B.A.A.) and Stephanie Reilly(Team RUN) are 2013 Runners of the Year, and Greater Lowell Road Runners is Club of the Year.
2013 Junior Olympic National Cross Country Champions James Donahue from Reading MA and the Sentinel Striders club team from Smithfield RI are co-winners of the USATF - New England Athlete of the Month for December 2013.
There will be two Introduction to the Weight Throw for scholastic throwers held at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center in Boston on the next two Saturdays, December 21 and 28 at 11:00 a.m.
USATF membership is annual and runs through December 31. Unless you obtained your membership after November 1, or have a multi-year membership, it's time to renew. If your most current card begins with a '7', then it's expired.)
