YOUTH STORM FIELDS AT REGION 1 JUNIOR OLYMPICS CHAMPIONSHIPS IN NEW YORK

11/21/2016

New England youth, making up a majority of participants, responded to challenging weather and course conditions to take a majority of scoring places at the USATF Region I cross Country Championship meet at Saratoga Spa State Park in New York on Sunday. Saturday's sunny 60 degree conditions changed drastically on Sunday with an inch of snow and continued rain for the first few hours of races.

New England clubs scored among the top 5 in all 10 divisions, as ten different teams earned at least one spot on the National starting line. Local squads swept the top 5 in three divisions (Girls 13-14, Boys 11-12, and Boys 13-14.)

Four individuals - Aidan Cox (NHThunder/11-12), John Pagliaro (Sentinel Striders/17-18), Una Treanor (SS/15-16), and Sydney Bagus (SS/17-18) - won individual races, with another 11 USATF-NE youth earning individual silver or bronze medals on the State Park course.
The top five teams and individuals in the top 30 qualified for the December 10 Nationals in Hoover AL.
